VALDEZ GOES EXTREME The story of how a remote northern community coming together, against overwhelming odds, to host two world events...the World Extreme Skiing & Snowboarding Competitions.

The story takes place in Valdez, Alaska, a far northern fishing village surrounded by heavily glaciated mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. A unique maritime climate with annual snowfall of 500 inches and slopes of 55º plus, provided the setting for the wildest in steep & deep skiing and snowboarding action.

"Totally surreal landscape, the best backcountry skiing and snowboarding in the world!"

The "Extreme Events" are the creation of two extraordinary Alaskans, Mike Cozad and Shannon Loveland. Extreme skiing has progressed to a popular phenomenon and the timing was perfect for these Extreme Competitions and Valdez was eager for positive recognition after the well known oil spill.

The community of Valdez embraced the idea and the enthusiasm was incredible. Everyone became involved; the Mayor and Ms. Valdez joined the hospitality squadrons, the town's dads set up elaborate basecamps and towed judges, photographers, film crews and skiers in by snowmobiles. Mindboggling logistics included avalanche safety, rescue, medical, weather alternatives, scheduling, hospitality, transportation and accommodation.

Valdez Goes Extreme is the story of a small Alaskan community's warmth and hospitality. With unwavering resolve, Valdez hosted these unique and wild events in one of the most magnificient settings in the world and ZINC/EXTREME is proud to have participated.
